Source: FAA, 2025 Airman Knowledge Tests volume report. The report gives pass rates of 69.59%, 74.01% and 63.04% and average scores of 74.02%, 75.90% and 72.58%; we rounded to one decimal place.

What the numbers mean

  • About 3 in 10 General tests didn’t pass. A 69.6% pass rate means roughly 30 of every 100 General tests taken in 2025 ended below the passing score.
  • Powerplant was the hardest of the three. At 63.0%, it had the lowest pass rate, so more than a third of Powerplant tests didn’t pass.
  • The average General score was only about 4 points above the line. The passing score is 70% and the average General score was 74.0%. A few weak subject areas can be the difference.
  • These count tests, not people. The report counts tests taken, so one person who took a test more than once may appear more than once.

How to use this

The General test covers 12 subject areas, and a weak area or two can drag a score under 70%. Find out where you stand before test day, then put your study time where you’re weakest.
